Kehinde Wiley: Saint Louis accompanies the artist’s solo exhibition at the Saint Louis Art Museum (October 29, 2018 – February 10, 2019). This new series of paintings re-envisions the museum's holdings of masterpieces as a starting point for succinct observations about representation throughout the history of art.  The artist specifically chose Ferguson, Missouri after the city became a flashpoint for nationwide protests touching on much larger issues of race, injustice, and police violence. Through a process of street casting starting in 2017, Wiley invited residents he met in the neighborhoods of north Saint Louis and Ferguson to pose for his paintings. The artist then created eleven portrait paintings inspired by carefully chosen artworks in the Museum's permanent collection.

Kehinde Wiley: Saint Louis is curated by Simon Kelly, PhD curator of modern and contemporary art, and Hannah Klemm, PhD, assistant curator of modern and contemporary art with Molly Moog, research assistant.
